Research at La Trobe University

Dr. Chee-Kai Chan - Department of Genetics
La Trobe University in Melbourne is one of the few Universities across Australia that is studying Gene Therapy.  In the department of Genetics Dr. Chee-Kai Chan has a Laboratory which is dedicated to researching this complicated and structurally unstable disease. The leader of the research at La Trobe is Dr Chee-Kai Chan  Dr Chan has been studying at La Trobe for 6 years. La Trobe’s Lab is mainly based on the research of Gene Therapy. Not that actual implementation of the therapy to the disease. In an interview with Dr Chan he explained how he moved the DNA from one cell into another by the used of microscopes. He also explained the clever way in which they got the Gene into the nucleus of the other cell. This way (the one he has been working on) is putting the gene in the cytoplasm with a certain protein that the nucleus will recognise as something that it needs to have and then take it into the nucleus. At La Trobe they also have connections with some hospitals that it is implemented. Dr Danuta Z. Loesch has a very big connection to a hospital that works with children with Autism. La Trobe has a very big connection with the Gene Therapy research unit but also has connections with hospitals with implementation.

A special thanks to Dr. Chee-Kai Chan in the Department of Genetics, Kurt Lackovic and Johnathen Baell from Walter+ Eliza Hall for there help.
